Polk City... Town Manager (863) 984-1375
Population... 1,850
"A community in charge of it's own destiny, working together
to prepare for future economic and residential growth opportunities,"
is how Town Manager John Swanson describes this incorporated,
and primarily residential and rural one and a half square mile
city on the southern-most tip of the Green Swamp.
Halfway between Tampa and Orlando, with easy access to Interstate
4, Polk City and its surrounding rural country side has become
one of the most rapidly growing areas in Polk County over the
past two years.
The opening to the south of Polk City in 1994 of the Fantasy
of Flight Museum and attraction, which features the annual Wings
and Strings weekend Festival, the Compass Rose Restaurant and
many rare vintage aircraft on display, has also encouraged the
tourism industry in the
area. Polk City is also the future home of the Water Ski Hall
of Fame and Museum, planned for opening in 1999.
Polk City also features a grocery, three popular restaurants,
and the historic Rancher's Cattleman Feed Store.
The Van Fleet Trail, which runs along abandoned railroad right-of-way
through the city is the beginning point of the Rails to Trails
project that will connect with Lake Alfred and Winter Haven. A
Special Area Plan in the works to the south of the city when approved
by the county and state, will open the area to commercial development
along State Road 557-A and County Road 559. Swanson said the city
is actively working to provide water, sewer, police, fire and
EMS to growing city's population. Currently, fire, police and
EMS are provided by the county services. Also coming the full
service library will provide Internet access to citizens.
Schools include Polk City Elementary, with upper grades attending
Lake Alfred Middle and Auburndale High School. The city provides
a summer recreation program for youth ages 6-15. Youth activities
include Youth Football and Little League Baseball.
