Winter Haven... Chamber
of Commerce (863) 293-2138
Welcome to Winter Haven!
This charming city, modest in size yet modern in outlook, is virtually
surrounded by the fragrant citrus groves, sparkling spring
fed lakes, and the gently rolling hills of Polk County - an environment
so lush and lovely that many people who originally come here to play, return
to stay! If you are planning a vacation, relocating your home and family,
or planning retirement, you will find Winter Haven has much to offer. Located
in the geographical center of the Florida peninsula, this charming Polk
County city, is an ideal vacation headquarter, as well as a superb place
for new families and for businesses relocating to Florida. Winter Haven
is a community of 25,000 people located an easy hour's drive from Tampa
and Orlando in Central Florida. Approximately 100,000 people reside in
the city's trade area. The community is nestled among 23 fresh-water lakes
which either touch or are contained within its city limits. Fourteen of
the lakes are connected by a system of navigable canals. Winter Haven is
146 feet above sea level and is comprised of 23.14 square miles, 7.5 of
which are lakes. Polk County's 2,002 square miles include 145 of water.
(550 Lakes) Winter Haven is home to Florida's first theme park "Beautiful
Cypress Gardens" and spring training home to the Cleveland Indians. Nearby,
visitors enjoy Bok Tower Gardens and Fantasy of Flight Air Museum ... both
just minutes away. The community's economy is based primarily on tourism,
agribusiness, services (including a sophisticated health care delivery
network) and retirement living. The community is an excellent location
to raise a family or to retire
and enjoy a wonderful climate. With Disney World, Busch Gardens, SeaWorld
and Universal Studios all within an hour's drive. Living costs here are
fairly comparable with those in northern states. Single-family homes, condos,
apartments and townhouses feature wide-open architecture sliding doors,
and screened lanais. Swimming pools with patios and facilities for outdoor
cooking reflect the influence of a mild climate. Homesites on the water
are the most appealing and the most expensive way of living here, but no
matter where you live, you can't be very far from at least one of Winter
Haven's many lakes. Winter Haven was recognized as a Main Street City in
November 1995. In its organizational year it attracted some 250 members
interested in the revitalization and preservation of downtown. Sparked
by the public private partnership of a supportive city government and interested
business community, Main Street Winter Haven, Inc. has recruited an experienced
Main Street manager who, working with an active board and committees, is
charting the course.
